Moira Thomson MBE, Education Director, BCom, DipEd (Oxon), DPSE, is an experienced teacher, who managed a Support for Learning and Special Needs team in a large Edinburgh secondary school for many years.

In her capacity as an education authority Development Officer, she contributed to policy frameworks and wrote guidance for colleagues on Dyslexia, Gifted & Talented Education, Standardised Assessment and Alternative Examination Arrangements. She was part of a small group that piloted the SQA’s Digital Examination papers.

She is also a popular provider of Continuing Professional Development – and has delivered a wide range of high quality courses to colleagues in Edinburgh and further afield. She has presented papers at the last 3 BDA international conferences.

She is the author of several works on Dyslexia and Gifted & Talented education, including the Dyslexia Scotland publication Supporting Dyslexic Pupils in the Secondary Curriculum, which was issued free to all Scottish secondary schools in 2007.

More recently, she contributed a chapter to the 2009 Sage Handbook of Dyslexia edited by Gavin Reid et al and has contributed articles on dyslexia to various professional journals. Her new book Supporting Dyslexic Students at Secondary School (Routledge) was launched at the Dyslexia Scotland 2008 conference where she delivered the paper Hidden Dyslexia on which the CPD Bytes online course Hidden Dyslexia is based.

Moira was recently awarded an MBE for Services to Children with Dyslexia.


 Alasdair Andrew, Technical Director,  is amongst other things, former Board member of Dyslexia Scotland and Chair of Dyslexia Scotland South East Branch. Being dyslexic himself and Father to two sons with dyslexia, he was keen to find out more about how to best support his sons’ needs throughout their education. It was whilst serving on DSSE’s committee that he met Moira Thomson and the idea for CPD Bytes was born.

Using his professional skills from his work as an EDRMS Analyst and trainer together with his all round computer expertise, he provides the technical aspect for delivering CPD Bytes’ courses online, ensuring their smooth userability for participants.

He has the vision and the passion to develop online e-learning courses to raise the awareness of teachers, CA/TAs, SENCOs and parents to better understand the issues around dyslexia.
